Wildlife Surveys

Surveying based upon track and sign

Animal tracks and sign provide one of the least intrusive ways to survey the activity of wildlife. An area is traversed along one or more lines (transects), and all identifiable track and sign is noted along with an estimate of the degree of utilization (low, medium, or high). The degree of utilization is based upon the frequency upon which tracks or sign are found, and upon an animal's impact on the environment (heavy browse, for instance, or dens).

Compre-hensive-ness

Surveys can range in comprehensiveness from a simple one-time walkthrough with a property owner, to a systematic multi-season survey. Brightleaf specializes in the track and sign of mammals and larger ground birds. If other species are to be surveyed, or if a large area is to be surveyed, Brightleaf can integrate additional specialists into the effort.

Reports

Reports can range from simple verbal remarks made during a walkthrough to a species-by-species, sector-by-sector printed or computer-based report. An example of the latter report (for a private survey performed under the direction of Paul Rezendes) can be found on this website.
